Around the world with the Patek Philippe Worldtimer
When talking about the concept of the world time watch, the name Patek Philippe immediately comes to mind. Patek was in fact one of the first brands to have an idea of Louis Cottier to create a watch that would display the world's time zones on the dial of a watch in a practical and legible way. At Baselworld 2016, this complication was once again put in the spotlight, this time combined with a chronograph. As for the display of the world time function, Patek keeps things classic: the hours and minutes are displayed on the central axis, the 24-hour ring on the edge of the central part (the first outer ring) with two tones (light for day and dark for night), and finally a city ring on the outer edge of the dial indicating the 24 most important cities in the world. Operating this world time complication is extremely simple, as all you have to do is press the pusher at 10 to change the time zone.
The most important innovation in this Patek Philippe 5930G is of course the addition of the chronograph complication - which was no easy task given the existing Worldtimer functions. Patek relies on its automatic in-house flyback chronograph (caliber CH 28-520). However, some changes had to be made. The first concerns the position of the chronograph's second scale, which is normally located on the outer edge of the dial. Here it is located between the 24-hour ring and the city ring, making the dial easier to read.
The case of the Patek Philippe Worldtimer is only 39.5 mm in diameter and just 12 mm thick - something you would not expect from such a complicated display. This means that the watch sits perfectly and discreetly on the wrist and can be worn very well with a suit. The 18-carat white gold case shows the new trend that Patek has been following for several years: more angles, more straight lines and rectangular pushers. It is modern, bolder than before, but still elegant.

About the watchmaker Patek Philippe
The name of the Swiss watch house Patek Philippe stands all over the world for tradition and class combined with innovation and perfection.
The company's origins date back to 1839, when Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek founded the watch manufacturer "Patek, Czapek & Cie". Even then, the company's aim was to produce nothing less than the best watches in the world.
From 1851 onwards, de Patek developed the innovative ideas together with Jean Adrien Philippe and Vincent Gostkowski - Czapek had since left - under the banner of the new watch house "Patek Philippe & Co". They reached their first high point with the invention of the winding crown, which made the extra key, which was a constant companion at the time for winding the movement and setting the time, superfluous. In doing so, they fundamentally changed the use of watches and were consequently able to count colorful figures from history, such as the British Queen Victoria Elizabeth, among their customers.
In 1868, the company produced the first Swiss wristwatch for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, with principles such as perfection and innovation continuing to be the maxim. With their well-thought-out design solutions, they have dominated the market ever since, with entrepreneurs Charles and Jean Stern acquiring a majority stake in Patek Philippe SA, which was already a joint-stock company, in the wake of the global economic crisis in 1929. The manufactory is still owned by their family today.
A large number of technologies and inventions can be traced back to the world-famous Patek Philippe watchmaking company. With the crown winding and the minute repeater, the company laid the foundations for today's automatic watch. In 1947, Patek Philippe also presented the world's first wristwatch with a time zone display and still holds over 100 patents today, thus asserting its pioneering role in the art of watchmaking.
