Applause (2006) - An ironic commentary by Banksy on the glorification of war

Banksy, arguably the most famous living artist in the world, has sparked an unparalleled hype in the art scene in recent years. His socially critical and creative works of art, fueled by his anonymity, are constantly breaking new records and are in greater demand than few other artists of our time. The artist's most recent auction result is the world-famous shredded Girl with Balloon (renamed Love is in the Bin), which was sold at Sotheby's in October 2021 for USD 29.5 million. Banksy regularly attracts attention with extraordinary actions and political statements. This positive publicity has long since made him known worldwide, so that his art is traded for record-breaking prices on the global art market.

The artwork on offer, entitled Applause, therefore fits perfectly into this scheme. The extraordinary screen print Applause, which originally comes from the iconic Barely Legal Print Set, illustrates the glorification of modern warfare by the media and the attempt to use war as entertainment. Banksy's allusion and art critical of war and the media is as topical as it can be in these times. The work Applause is mostly black and white, apart from the bright yellow safety vests of the two air traffic controllers. The provocative red sign with the inscription "Applause" is written in the format of a game show or sitcom. The request to "applause" is usually directed at the viewers and audience in a television show in order to artificially trigger cheers and an eccentric mood.

Applause (2006) is an unsigned print from a limited edition of 500 works, accompanied by an original certificate from the Pest Control Office.

About Banksy

Banksy is the pseudonym of an anonymous British street artist and activist whose identity remains unknown to this day. Known for his politically and socially motivated artworks, which are often inspired by social injustices, political themes and criticism of capitalism. His works are characterized by their provocative nature and critical view of modern society. Banksy uses various techniques such as stencil graffiti, installations and public interventions to spread his messages.
